A science fiction story that was every bit like a space soap opera, Star Wars is the classic tale of good against bad with heroes and villains in a distant galaxy. The epic Star Wars movies were conceived by George Lucas, then a young director with a new vision on film making. Twentieth Century Fox released the first film of the original trilogy, “A New Hope” in May of 1977. In a short time there were few people alive who did not know who Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi Wan Kanobi and R2D2 was.
The film was at first screened in less than 200 theaters across the nation. Within days the film was released to a much greater screening as it became apparent this was a box office hit. The second movie “The Empire Strikes Back,” and the third movie “Return of The Jedi,” were released in three year intervals.
Twenty years after the release of original Star Wars movie Lucas Films re-released the original trilogy, re-mastered with extra scenes taking advantage of the much greater technology available. Additionally he had an entire new generation to capture as fans that could now experience the original Star Wars Trilogy on the big screen instead of on a home television. It was two years later that the first film of three prequels was released, “The Phantom Menace,” followed by “Attack of The Clones,” and “Revenge of The Sith,” each released in three year intervals as the first trilogy was.
As of 2008 the total gross revenue for the Star Wars films was $4.3 billion dollars. That revenue did not come easily as the six movies were the result of great effort and the innovation of technology that became a standard for modern science fiction movies. Breathtaking action, a story that has been told before, however this time created by genius imagination along with great acting, and directing. With master artistry, the story was packaged very neatly together with sensational ground breaking special effects and fun dialogue, making Star Wars impossible not to love.
In 1967 Stanley Kubrick used creative photography to create very realistic space scenes in his classic movie 2001. George Lucas’s vision took that to a new level with space ships, alien creatures, and the “light Saber” the simplest of all weapons a sword but these were futuristic laser swords. The characters became our friends or foes and like the Wizard of Oz this story became part of modern culture. The main character throughout all 6 movies is Darth Vader, a Jedi Knight who turns to the dark side of the force, an omnipresent energy field that surrounds everything. Good triumphs over evil as it should but his intense powers and presence in the Star Wars story made the tall fierce – black armored Vader the most recognizable “bad guy” in the World. As did the words “May the force be with you.”
